My latest blog post for Twin Cities business magazine discusses how innovation can backfire, using the latest Super Bowl commercials as examples. Here’s the video playlist of those examples:
1) Make Safe Happen – Nationwide 2015 Super Bowl Commercial
I get that preventable accidents are serious things and parents should do everything they can to protect their kids, but there’s a time and a place for messages like that and the Super Bowl was not one of those times.
2) With Dad – Nissan 2015 Super Bowl Commercial
Did anybody tell the agency or Nissan that Harry Chapin actually died in a car accident?
3) Brewed The Hard Way – Budweiser 2015 Super Bowl Commercial
Bud poked fun at craft beer and touched off a twitter storm against the brand; odd when you consider that the King of Beers has been buying up craft breweries like wild.
4) Unexpected – Kia 2015 Super Bowl Commercial
On the flip side, Kia played off Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond character to great effect.
5) Lost Dog – Budweiser 2015 Super Bowl Commercial
Animals saved the day for Budweiser with this Lost Dog commercial. I don’t know if it’s going to sell any beer, but it was a touching commercial and I don’t know anybody that didn’t like it.
