I held out till I could hold out no longer when it came to switching from an actual, physical keyboard on my phone to virtual keyboards.
I liked the fact that I could type by feel without having to look at the keyboard. One of the coolest phones I’ve ever owned was the Sidekick II.
The keyboard had little nubs you could feel to ensure your thumbs were in the home position.
I resisted for as long as I could but the future inevitably caught up with me and I had to learn virtual typing…and suffer the daily awkwardness and indignities of autocorrect.
I tried swipe-typing some time ago and it was just a hot mess of misspellings and run-on gobbledegook words. That experiment lasted all of 30 seconds.
Voice input is much better and very helpful but hardly precise.
Enter Gboard, Google’s new virtual keyboard for iOS.
I love it first and foremost for its glide typing feature, which is as easy as it is accurate.
While if that’s all Gboard did, I would be immensely happy but the app does much more than make mobile typing a breeze. Gboard also:
- Works with any mobile app,
- Lets you use the spacebar as a trackpad,
- Has search and share baked in,
- And Gif search,
- And emoji search.
The only downside is you cannot activate voice input from the keyboard.
